Physical examination and evidence collection after sexual assault and for issues of child abuse are available at San Francisco General Hospital.
The purpose of the exam for sexual assault or abuse is to:
- Document the history
- Examine for injuries, both acute and non-acute
- Document the findings and photograph when needed
- Provide testing for sexually transmitted infection and pregnancy
- Treat, when appropriate, to reduce the chances of sexually transmitted infection and pregnancy
- Communicate with law enforcement and child protection professionals
- Forensic evidence will be collected when requested by law enforcement
- Physicians and nurse practitioners perform the examinations for children and teenagers.
There is no charge for forensic medical examinations.
